Interpersonal Relationships

Interpersonal Relationships

My interpersonal relationship

One interpersonal relationship I have in my life is with this girl that I have known ever since I was in 6th grade. We met on a recreational soccer team where I am from known as Whittier Area Youth Soccer. She also went to my high school which caused us to become even closer. When we were seniors, her and I decided to look at colleges and we applied to the same one, Oregon State University. There have been several points in our life where she stopped talking to me and stopped hanging out with me and our friend group. Her decision to leave the group make me think of the possible reasons why she could have left. There were times where I thought it was my fault and other times, I thought it was because the whole vibe of the group that she may have not connected with anymore. I am mentioning this because when her and I finally got to the university we would hang out all the time and make plans with the same people that we met at the school. However, she stopped hanging out with me and the group that she introduced me to.

Knapp's Model

According to Knapp's Relational Model, this part in our relationship represented stagnating and avoidance. As stated in the video, "Navigating Relationships Online: Exploring Knapp's Relational Model" the model is not a linear model and therefore a relationship can occur at different points in the model and jump from one section to the other. For example, my friend and I were at relational maintenance and then all of a sudden it went to avoidance. This made me think to myself, "Is the friendship done? Are we ever going to talk again?" These questions made me make the conclusion that the friendship was probably going to go from avoidance to termination. In chapter 5 Perceiving Others it states that"...in many cases, judging others without enough knowledge or information can be problematic." (Adler 134). I made a snap judgement on my friend that she was fake and always made excuses not to hang out. However, I started to miss her, and I realized that I might've made the wrong conclusions because I really didn't know what was going on. This is where the impacts of online communication affected my interpersonal relationship with her because after having those feelings, I decided to reach out to her and ask if she wanted to hang out again and catch up. Ever since I initiated that hang out after not talking for a little while, me and her went back to the relational maintenance stage.

The Importance of Empathy

This is a YouTube video from chapter 5 that goes over the importance of empathy. This is one of the many ways that enhances our relationships in our life.
