Communication Fallacies

Image
Communication Fallacies One article that I was looking over was a news article titled " Girl, 13, had to go to hospital after taking cannabis edible at Southwest Side Chicago school - CBS Chicago ". In the beginning, it states, "A mother says her 13-year-old daughter was unconscious for 24 hours after she was given a marijuana edible at school." One of the fallacies that this represents is hasty generalization because further in the reading it says that a student consumed a substance that "may have been cannabis" or in another line, "what they believe was an edible". This is a hasty generalization because no one knows for sure if the substance the students consumed was really cannabis or not and they made a generalization based on what happened to the students. What a hasty generalization is that it is a "f allacy of inductive reasoning" as stated in the lecture video. This means that when 1 thing happens and people assume that what hap...

Online Arguments: Is Texting a Better Way To Argue?

Image
Is Texting a Better Way To Argue? The online argument is on Reddit where this person says that texting is the best way to have a deep discussion or argument. I chose this online argument for my assignment because there have been several times where I have argued with someone over text and in my opinion, I feel like it doesn’t help with effective communication. However, some people find it easier to communicate over text than in person.  One of the three negative examples or concerns that I have with this online arguments is that there are some people that say that they cut off the argument with “I rather talk in person” but there was one person who commented that it makes them feel worse when they have to argue face to face because they can’t process their emotions properly and it creates a lag because of that. Another concern is if people are forgetting how to actually act in real life when it comes to talking about a serious situation. If they feel too overwhelmed to talk about a...

Program UP

Image
Program Up  One business I chose is a small business known as Program Athletics by an online influencer named Christopher David.  I think Chris/ Program Athletics does a very good job at communicating both on his online website and social media platforms in several ways. He makes Instagram reels not only to show off his merch but also inspire people to keep on going at whatever life throws at them. He always has a saying in his videos, "stick with the program" or "program up". That is a reminder and type of motivation in a way to keep going. Some of his merch even says on it "show up every day". On the website to buy the merch, when you scroll all the way down to the bottom where it says "about", it mentions that they represent people who show up every day "NO MATTER WHAT". On the website, at the very top it thanks you for showing up every day and then has its logo underneath it that says Program Athletics. In the middle, it shows a...

What Is Sleep Podcast

Image
What Is Sleep Podcast by Matthew Walker I chose to listen to a podcast episode by Matthew Walker called What Is Sleep which is the first episode of his podcast series. I chose this podcast because I am currently reading his book called “Why We Sleep” and I think learning more about it is very interesting. His pitch was very soft but also not too soft to where you will have a lack of attention. His rate of speaking was not too fast but not too slow and his volume was good, speaking very clearly. These aspects had an overall positive effect on the podcast because it is easy to follow along and understand what he was saying. I think the podcast was a good way to convey this information. However, it may have been better as a video presentation depending on the person. This is because he is talking about sleep and if you had to listen to a podcast about sleep for a long period of time, you may end up falling asleep more likely than if you were watching a video. The intended audience c...
